lossing to a player that is weaker than you

I believe that most of the badminton player went through this even the international player like Lin Dan. That event happen in 2004 which he lost to Ronald Susilo. It happened to me as well. This shows that badminton is not all about physical and skills, it also about mental skills.

I remembered during my teens, i had played with the same player 2 times and i always had a close fight with him but lost to him during competition, I keep asking myself why i always lost to him, but i could not find an answer. I found out the answer after the last time i played with him and won the game during our college competition.

The answer that i keep lossing to him is because I WAN to win him too much and keep making mistake. The last time i played with him, i just have a mindset that keep ever shuttles in the court and winning and lossing is not important to me , will just play a good badminton game.

So guys having different mindset in different situation is important in badminton.

Choking in badminton

Choking is what others refer as Stage Fright,Freakout,Shock,Panic,Lost,Confuse, don't know what to do orI don't know what the hell am I doing in there.

This occurs only you do not have a routine to followin your game, nervous, unknown like don't know who am I playing against,or known like I am playing with a verygood player no chance, making a mistake and not getting back where you actually belong.

As an elite athlete you MUST be able to control this situation and NOT THE VICTIM to the situation.

So the first basic principle is set up a routine. How to go about?

when we train a particular technical skill over and over... again and again.

We are actually searching which is the most effective time to strike the shuttle, eg. how high and at what distance am I away from the shuttle. (SENSING DISTANCE)

What impact speed am I supposed to hit it. How do I feel the impact upon contact. (FEELING THE STRENGTH)

What sound did I hear, a solid one,a soft one or onethat I think that it hits the frame. (HEARING THE IMPACT)

How fast is the shuttle speed (FEELING THE SPEED)

hat is the flight like? too low too high or just high enough to clear pass the opponent. (SEEING THE FLIGHT)

And lastly what do you feel about that shot, feeling good, satisfactory feeling, accomplishment feeling.

While your mind is going through' all this you are focusing your training. When you are focus your mind is fully occupied on what you are doing out there and result you will not choke. You are under control of what you are doing and what you are supposed to do.

measure your training

One of the ways to measure your training on technical skills will be writing down all the technical skills. and state down how many hours you had train for each skills per week, it is very simple to do that. This allow you to check and measure which skills u are weak at and which do not have enough training.

You can also do it using microsoft excel.

destress yourself in sports

Training stress management is like mental and physicaltrg. Learning to relax is one of it. Example is after a hard day you walk into your bathroom and while taking a shower you close your eyes and run your face under the shower head you feel the water massaging your eyes. It is a good feeling, and stick your tongue out to reach for the water you will feel that you are rehydrating and the thirst is been satisfied. Squat fully under the shower and close your eyes and feel you are under a waterfall while the water is splashing on your back.

These are some example you can do and to add more you can even massage some of the tight muscle you have. This is how you train during the period you have no stress and when you have stress you already know what to do.

Pre- comp strategy trg is preparing yourself before a competition. Example is a week before your competition you go to the gym to rep up : intensive interval method trg.

Some Sport psychology training in badminton

1) Quickness trg means : the objective speed on hand, eye, leg and mind co-ordination required at that point on time. Example like the juggling of 2 shuttles in pushing. THIS IS TRAIN TO TRAIN PHASE.

2) Pre competition strategy means : throwing simulated events of game movement and giving quick answer on solutions to overcome the competitor's strategy. Example opponent is punching into your backcourt backhand and moving into offensive position, WHAT WILL YOU DO TO PREVENT THE OPPONENT FROM ACHEIVING HIS OBJECTIVE? THIS IS TRAIN TO COMPETE AND WIN PHASE.

3) Imagery technical movement means : If you have a wrong or unfavourable body movement to perform a technical shot like a backcourt lob. After being told by a coach to correct the movement you actually do this ITM to change your mind concept of the current movement to the new one. THIS IS TRAIN TO TRAIN PHASE.

4) Stress management means : You must be able to control your emotions after you have taught to do stress management. Example you go to the forest or beach on a day that you are very stress or uptight due to the coming exam or tournament. In the forest or beach you will concentrate to feel, smell, breath and listen to the envoirment around you. This will take at least half an hour. then you are ready to analyse the current position you are in and you are able to put every thing back to its place. THIS IS TRAIN TO COMPETE AND WIN PHASE

5) Risk management means : You will be taught when to take risk during a match. Example reading the lines when you are not confident to make a good delivery of the shuttle at the extreme backcourt due to wrong footing and you feel that it is out. This is train to compete and win phase.

Singapore open final

During singapore open, i went to watch this final game between Lee Chong wei and simon. It was not a very interesting game, as Lee Chong wei is gaining advantage and winning all his points easily. Simon was not in good form.

Simon was caught twice for the same shot, my friend and i was discussing, should he be caught? This is what it happened : Simon did a net stab, Lee Chong Wei performed a last mins cross court net, and Simon did not react at all. So my friends was saying, he should at least react such as try to brush the shuttle down or net back, because after performing a net stab, our mind should focusing incoming shuttles from the front court. This tell us that everyone make mistake even the world top player, non of the players is perfect.

what kind of badminton player are you ?

Basically there are 3 types of badminton player that i will classify them

1) Social athlete : Coming in for training late, not eaten, unprepared physical and mentally and also miss the warm up motor skills.

2) Competitive athlete : Come in early, do a few old man stretching and start to play. No objective and goal setting for that evening "TRAINING SESSION" so call. Mark attendance to keep abreast to the rules and regulation.

3) Elite athlete : Have an early meal. Carry a pair of skipping rope to train his/her plyometrics while waiting. Mentally and physically prepared for thetraining. Come 30 mins early to warm up and prepare to do the motor skills set by the coach. Set objective for that evening's training and give his/her 110% EFFORT on the drills and exercises given. Ask question by and offer feedback to trainer so to make improvement for the future training. Have a log book on the first day of training till he/she reaches the peak, so he/she can back track on what he/she have.

5 importants points to improve our badminton skills

1) WHEN TO STRIKE : upper box or mid box

2) YOUR DISTANCE BEFORE THE STRIKE : your best body position , example smashing should be at the top and centre of your head.

3) YOUR GRIP : holding racquet in upper grip for frontcourt, middle grip for midcourt and lower grip for backcourt

4) SPEED OF STRIKE : increase your striking speed every new day you train

5) DIRECTION OF DELIVERY : deliver shuttle to where there is a wider space (away from player)

Useage of technical badminton skills

This is how i define some of the useage of the skills in badminton visitor kindly leave your comment:

1) BACKHAND -- Backhand is used as an inter relatedskill covering your overhead. Example : If the situation demands an immediate offensive where the player sees an opportunity he will select an overhead offensive rather than using his backhand. On the other hand if the player is court with his wrong footing or rather late in moving to his backcourt he will use hisbackhand. Only a proper decisive selection makes the technical skill more effective according to the situation the player sees fit.

2) LOBBING --- Attacking lob is effective when the player sees the opponent coverage percentage is greater in the mid and mid-front court. As a result it became offensive to the opponent upon the corrective moment of usuage. As for clearing lob it is used when the player is late in moving to the backcourt or the shuttle pass his head. It is also use to move player to the deep backcourt and await for him to make an attack on the front court. (Setting opportunity to counter for theplayer)

3) Dropshot is applied when the player sees that the opponent percentage of coverage is at mid and mid-backcourt. It can be also applied to set an offensive strategy for the player to counter with a tap or a flip upon anticipation.

Interesting games against weaker player

Two days ago, i watch some video of Lee Chong Wei. After watching i feel like playing and doing good footwork like him. So i decide to call one of my friend, and he told me that i can join him and play some matches with some weaker player. I did not agree at the first place , because i was thinking that it may be quite boring to play with them. But i decide to go ahead, as i really can't find anyone to play with me.

During the game, i play quite relax, because they are really that strong, but i discovered something. These weaker player usually play differently compare to strong player which is so call going against the logical game play. For example, when the shuttle is so high at the net, they do not know how to tap it down, so they will net or lift to the back court. Sometime they will just hit a unexpected direction. So don't unestimate weaker player, because some of their shot is so unexpected.

Do not injure

Athlete must not injure, if you are injured, you will never be the same even though you had recovered.

I had injured few weeks ago, had treatment for 6 times on my Achilles. Yesterday i went to have some games with my usual sparing partner. I felt that i am not use to the speed of the shuttles and i can't really go all the way out to play the game, this is mainly due to the phobia that instill in me when after i injured.

So Athletes, please take care of your body DO NOT INJURE, even your physically had recovered , but mentally may not heal so fast. Try to do more strength conditioning to strengthen up your body before going for intensive training.

Badminton vs Tennis statistic

Below is some of the information on badminton that i found on net, and i remember one of my coach told me that, if both player playing standard are almost the same, when they having a match with 2 to 3 sets, they can eventually cover up to 6km in the game.

Usually people that can't play well or have little knowledge in badminton will think that badminton court is so small demanding in fitness not as high when compare to tennis but they are wrong.

Time: Badminton =1 hour & 16 mins, tennis = 3 hours & 18 mins
Ball/Shuttle in Play: Badminton =37 mins, tennis = 18 mins
Match Intensity*:Badminton = 48 percent tennis = 9 percent
Rallies: Badminton =146 tennis = 299
Shots: Badminton =1972 tennis = 1004
Shots Per Rally: Badminton =13.5 tennis = 3.4
Distance Covered: Badminton = 4 miles = 6.44km ,tennis = 2miles = 3.22km

Badminton Facts/ badminton vs tennis

  1. Badminton require high aerobic stamina compare to tennis.
  2. Require lesser upper body strength compare to tennis.
  3. Require greater leg strength, due to demanding in multiple jump smash.
  4. Require greater explosive athleticism. Because it require to jump for height to hit the shuttlecock fast so opponent will have lesser time in reacting and decision making.
  5. Require fast reaction especially in double game compare to tennis because player must not let the shuttlecock to touch the ground.

Badminton is the world's fastest racket sports, because the shuttles can leave the racket upon hitting at a speed of up to 200mph

It was recorded that the fastest single game smashing was done by Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia at a speed of 305 km/h. Where as the fastest double game smashing was done by Fu Hai Feng of China at a speed of 332km/h.

A good badminton player should have explosiveness, quick reflexes and rapid hand-eye coordination, superb aerobic endurance.

Rules of badminton

The badminton playing rules had change over the years, it change from 15 points system with service over ( score to gain service ) women's singles 11 points system both must and matches are played to the best of 3sets -> 7 points system with service over best of 5 sets and back to 15 points system again in 2002.

In December 2005, the rules changed to 21 point system , played to the best of 3 sets. The winner of a rally scores a point regardless of who served. If the score reaches 20-20, the winner is the player or team with a two-point advantage. (note :when the server gain point he have to change to the other side of his court to serve, just remember odd score of his will be at the left , even score of his will stand at the right side of his court.

For example, both player A and player B reached 20-20, player A had to score constantly 2 points to make it 22-20 to win the set. IF player A did not did that, the score became 21-21, then it will have to add 2 points to make it 23 -21 to end the game. If the score goes up to 29-29, the winner is the first to reach 30 points.

As for double a team now has only one serve in doubles, rather than two under the old rules. Once the server team had gain a point server and his partner must switch side over to his partner half court.

Hope this help for badminton beginner
